Francis McGlone, PhD in Neuroscience, worked with Unilever, one of the world’s largest food companies, for 10 years. His position of combining neuroscience with the food industry was new according to the program on CBC called The Science of Addictive Food.
Dr. McGlone talked about “what drove the preference for food.” During his time at Unilever he shared that he did an experiment where he dropped chili on the tongue every 38 seconds and found that drove the “feel good” chemicals in the brain. He also shared that one spoon of ice cream put someone in the “happy zone.”
I have often heard that cayenne pepper helps increase metabolism, so I have seen people put cayenne pepper on everything – including ice cream and apple pie. I tried it. It was actually pretty good! There are claims it can help with pain and psoriasis also. An article from the University of Maryland Medical Center gives more information.
On the Society for Neuroscience website they talk about how the diet effects the brain structure. In this article, they mention things such as a possible link between high-fructose and depression, and obesity and quicker aging.
