Years ago, when I went through my own illness, I learned that food could improve my immune system. One of the foods I learned about was onions. Yes, onions!
In the book, 100 Health-Boosting Foods, by Hamlyn, they share that onions are a great source of antioxidants and that “the sulfurous compounds in onions…may help protect against asthma and some inflammatory disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis.” It goes on to claim that onions are thought to reduce free radicals in the body, “reducing the risk of strokes, heart disease, cancer, [Alzheimer’s]” and that the “quercetin” found in “red onions” protects against heart disease. In addition, the “sulfurous compounds in onions” can reduce high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, and are thought to fight cancer and “stimulate the liver’s own natural detoxification process.”
Onions are notorious for making you cry when you cut them, yet did you ever think about how much easier it is to laugh when you are feeling better!
