HOW FOODS AFFECT YOUR MOODS

We know that the wrong kinds of food can affect our physical being…but did you know they can also affect our mental and emotional one? Although, the different and special vitamins and minerals in certain health foods may be able to support a more positive mood if eaten often enough.

From an article about how foods affect our moods, “Food affects the body’s metabolism, hormones and neurotransmitters (mood chemicals that are produced in the brain), and these in turn influence our emotions, concentration and energy, according to Dr. Nishi Dhawan, who is co-founder (along with Dr. Bal Pawa) of the Westcoast Women’s Clinic in Vancouver. Proteins, carbohydrates and vitamins in foods work to keep our metabolism, hormones and neurotransmitters in check, which also balances our moods. By contrast, consuming too much sugar, alcohol and caffeine can cause low moods by bringing on an inflammatory response in the nervous system, says Dhawan.”

Stressed?

If you have been feeling stressed recently chances are your magnesium levels are lower than they should be. Your magnesium levels can be raised by eating organic pumpkin seeds, leafy greens, and almonds.

Depressed?

If you have been feeling a little down and need some cheering up, B vitamins may come to the rescue! You can find these in asparagus, beans, peas, eggs, spinach, fish, and flax seeds.

Low Energy?

If you have been feeling a lack of energy, fatigued, and not your normal self you could be low on Iron and B12. Those can be found in spinach, bell peppers, and eggs.

Fuzzy and Unfocused?

If you are feeling a little fuzzy and need to be more alert for your day, you may have low levels of zinc and/or tyrosine. These can be found in avocados, bananas, beans, and nuts. Don’t forget to stay hydrated! When you are dehydrated, you will tend to feel less alert and more tired.

By feeding your body good food and proper nutrition, it will repay you with a happier, healthier, and more relaxed and focused life!
