According to an article on cspinet.org “Soda pop is Americans’ single biggest source of refined sugars, providing the average person with one-third of that sugar.” Teen-age boys get about 15 teaspoons of sugar a day from soft drinks and the average teen-age girl gets about 10 teaspoons of sugar a day from soft drinks.
Preliminary research suggests that drinking soda pop instead of milk can contribute to broken bones in children and adolescents. The article goes on to say that obesity rates have risen in conjunction with soda consumption. The article really makes one think when they share information like “twenty years ago, boys consumed twice as much milk as soft drinks and girls consumed 50% more milk than soft drinks, and now boys and girls consume twice as much soda pop as milk.”
