Cows and fish are being taught to eat corn. For cows, they would naturally eat grass, not corn. The corn makes them fat more quickly. According to the movie, Food, Inc. animals stand in ankle deep manure. 400 animals are slaughtered per hour. How can you keep manure from getting onto the other carcasses?
In the last 50 years, there has been a decrease in food inspectors. Funding has gone down and industries monitor themselves more.
According to the movie, if you give a grass fed diet to animals for five days instead of a corn diet, 80% of the eCOLI in the gut disappears, but instead industry went to a more high tech fix, where hamburger meat is cleaned with ammonia to clean eCOLI.
